Caring For Your Syngonium Potted Plant

1. Light

Syngoniums love bright, indirect light, thus a bright living area, bathroom or bedroom is perfect for these little gems. Avoid direct sunlight as this may lead to scorched leaves.

2. Watering

Soil should be kept evenly moist, but not soggy. A great rule to this would be to only water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Syngoniums don’t like having wet feet and overwatering can lead to root rot. Thus, ensure your pots can drain freely. For ceramic pots with no drainage holes, adding pebbles in the bottom can assist with keeping roots not overly wet. You can also remove the inner pot and water them separately in a sink, allowing them to drain before returning them back to their decorative ceramic pot.

3. Humidity

Originating from tropical South America, Syngoniums prefer higher humidity levels. You can assist in this by misting the leaves or by placing a tray of water nearby to increase humidity.

4. Temperature

They thrive in temperatures between 15-29°C (60-85°F). During winter, in cold regions, it may be a good idea to bring your plant indoors if you normally like to display them on a balcony or outdoor area, this prevents exposing them to temperatures below 10°C. Avoid exposing them to cold drafts, as this can cause browning of the leaf tips and eventually death.

5. Soil

Use well-draining potting mix, preferably with perlite for aeration. Plants can be re-potted when roots begin showing out the bottom of the pot, approximately every 1-2 years. This helps plants from becoming root bound.

6. Fertilizing

For best results, regularly feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) every 4-6 weeks.

7. Pruning

Regularly pruning excessive tendrils can help to maintain a bushy and compact shape. Trimming out any yellowing or damaged leaves can also help transfer energy into new healthy growth.

8. Support

As Syngoniums are climbers, they can be grown into many different shapes such as up totem poles, trellis, around hoops etc. Alternatively, you can display them hanging in a pot to allow their gorgeous trendrils to cascade down like in a jungle.

Remember that individual plant needs may vary, so always observe your Syngonium and adjust the care accordingly. Happy Gardening!
